Not last year’s winner Nils Politt, not his Bora-hansgrohe teammate Emanuel Buchmann – Georg Zimmermann has the best German chances of a podium finish in the Germany Tour of professional cyclists.

Not last year’s winner Nils Politt, not his Bora-hansgrohe teammate Emanuel Buchmann – Georg Zimmermann has the best German chances of a podium finish in the Germany Tour of professional cyclists.

The 24-year-old from Augsburg is just one second behind in third place before the final stage on Sunday. “I’ll do my best to do as well as possible in the overall standings,” said Zimmermann ahead of the 186.6 kilometers from Schiltach to Stuttgart.

The proximity to his roots in particular motivates the professional of the Belgian Intermarché WantyGobert team. “Tomorrow we will only drive 100 kilometers from my home town,” said Zimmermann after his fifth place on the queen’s stage on Saturday.

On the ascent to the 1207 meter high Schauinsland, Zimmermann had stolen the show from Germany’s climbing ace Emanuel Buchmann and crossed the finish line just 29 seconds after the day’s winner Adam Yates.

On the other hand, Buchmann, who started the stage with big goals, was sobered up. “On the final climb, my legs quickly closed and I was left behind relatively early. You can’t say much about that, it just wasn’t enough to go further up the field,” said the Ravensburger, who finished more than a minute and a half behind Zimmermann.
