The President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet requested on Friday May 17 during a meeting in Matignon in New Caledonia a postponement of the convocation of the Congress which must validate the constitutional reform on the unfreezing of the electorate in the archipelago, Franceinfo learned from parliamentary sources.

The Congress, bringing together deputies and senators, must validate “before the end of June”, according to Emmanuel Macron, this electoral reform contested by the separatists, at the origin of an outbreak of violence on the archipelago. The President of the National Assembly considered that the convocation of the Congress did not allow the conditions for dialogue and appeasement and proposed to postpone this convocation.

The authorities welcomed on Friday a decline in violence on the archipelago, now under a state of emergency, even if certain districts of Nouméa remained out of control on the fifth day of riots caused by this reform of the electoral body which is contested by the independentists.
