The omicron wave hasn’t broken yet, at least not everywhere. The nationwide incidence is falling, but the average value hides the fact that the development varies greatly from region to region and that the number of infections in the particularly vulnerable population groups continues to rise. Nevertheless, the signs are pointing to relaxation: “We deserve it to get better,” said Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on Wednesday evening after the federal and state governments had jointly decided on extensive openings. The peak of the omicron wave has probably been reached and one can assume that the situation is now improving from day to day. A closer look at the data reveals that the significantly more significant numbers of seriously ill and deceased have not yet peaked.
