New record for the German national team: the fastest DFB international goal of all time was scored in the friendly against France.

A tailor-made start for national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s “new” national team in the year of the home European Championship: after just seven seconds, the DFB team went against them in Lyon on Saturday evening France in the lead. The goal by Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen was the fastest goal in German international history.

Philipp Wirtz fastest German DFB goalscorer

To date, Lukas Podolski’s 1-0 win in a 4-2 win against Ecuador in May 2013 was the earliest goal for the German national team. “Poldi” needed nine seconds for the DFB team’s opening goal in Miami.

Wirtz’s 1-0 goal was relatively easy to achieve. After the kick-off, DFB returnee Toni Kroos played the ball forward from the center circle to Wirtz. The Leverkusen player accepted it, took a few steps towards the French penalty area and shot unchallenged from around 20 meters and from a central position. France goalkeeper Brice Samba could only watch – it was 1-0 for Germany. It stayed that way until the half-time whistle.

Curious: Also on Saturday, the fastest goal in the ÖFB team’s international history was scored in Austria’s international match against Slovakia. Christoph Baumgartner from the German Bundesliga club RB Leipzig also needed seven seconds and was slightly faster than Florian Wirtz. The game in Bratislava ended 2-0.

The friendly match in Lyon is the start of the 2024 international match year for the German national team. Before the start of the European Championship there are still test matches against the Netherlands next Tuesday and in June against Ukraine and Greece. The home tournament begins on June 14th with the match between Germany and Scotland in Munich.
