At major exhibitions in recent years, the impression was sometimes gained that contemporary art from the Global South was falling into two camps: works by documentaries and actions by activists. While some wanted to record and pass on grievances, others urged that they be abolished immediately with the means of art. But if you look at the photographic oeuvre of Gauri Gill, who was born in 1970 and is currently on view at the Frankfurt Schirn, such categories begin to falter.
