HBO had already shot the pilot for a “Game of Thrones” prequel. However, despite the 30 million dollar budget, it was not able to convince.

The first attempt at a “Game of Thrones” prequel was above all a story of failure for HBO: As a new book reveals, the idea of the prequel, in which Naomi Watts (53), among others, was supposed to play, was discarded. However, only after the pilot was filmed for a whopping $ 30 million.

Former WarnerMedia chairman Robert Greenblatt, 61, told journalist and writer James Andrew Miller in an interview according to “Tinderbox: HBO’s Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers”: “They had spent over $ 30 million on a Game of Thrones prequel pilot that was in production when I joined.” The pilot episode is said to have been filmed in Northern Ireland in 2019.

“It just doesn’t work”

Greenblatt continues: “And when I saw a cut of it, a few months after I arrived, I said to Casey, ‘It just doesn’t work and I don’t think it can deliver what the original series promised.’ And he didn’t contradict me, which was actually a relief. ” Casey Bloys is the chief content officer at HBO.

There was a lot of pressure to “get it right” and he didn’t think it would work that way, Greenblatt said. “After careful consideration, we decided not to continue with the untitled ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel,” HBO said in a statement and thanked the cast, crew and other people involved for their hard work.

Another “Game of Thrones” series, on the other hand, has received the green light, as is well known: The first season of “House of the Dragon” is said to consist of ten episodes. Matt Smith (38), Emma D’Arcy (29), Steve Toussaint (56), Rhys Ifans (54), Olivia Cooke (27) and Paddy Considine (48) will appear in it. The series is slated to premiere on HBO next year.
