Freight traffic: industry versus rail – economy

From

Markus Balser, Berlin

How much does the economy need a functioning railway? The Evonik plant in Wesseling near Cologne, with around 1,000 employees, is a good example of this: a full freight train brings material for the production of preliminary products for tires or paints to the plant every day. The systems depend on deliveries from Antwerp, for example, which require special wagons. Not much works in Wesseling without the rail connection.
