Steamboat trip and dinner – that was on the agenda for Angela Merkel at the weekend. She met with former classmates.

50 years after graduating from high school, the former Chancellor Met Angela Merkel with former classmates in Templin at the weekend. A spokeswoman for Merkel confirmed this upon request. The “Bild” newspaper had previously reported on the class reunion, including a steamboat trip and dinner in the town in the Uckermark on Saturday.

The former chancellor and long-time CDU leader is a child of the city. The now 69-year-old was born in Hamburg as the daughter of pastor Horst Kasner and his wife Herlind. The family moved from the Federal Republic to the GDR and later moved to Templin.

Merkel lived here from 1957 to 1973 before studying in Leipzig after graduating from high school and later working in Berlin. Merkel has been an honorary citizen of Templin since 2019.
