A humpback whale has been traveling in the Baltic Sea since Friday and appeared several times on the coast of Schleswig-Holstein. On Monday morning the humpback whale was seen again in the Flensburg Fjord.
According to the nature conservation association NABU, he could be looking for food. Two sailors from Kiel said they discovered the 12-meter-long whale on their boat in the harbor when it surfaced. The animal was spotted near Glücksburg (Schleswig-Flensburg district) on Friday. He was then seen at the Eckernförde Mole and near Waabs (both in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district). It was initially assumed that there were two animals, but NABU reported on Sunday that only one animal was seen.
Conservationists are concerned about the animal’s safety
The nature conservation association NABU assumes that the swarms of herring are the reason why whales visit the Baltic Sea. According to NABU, humpback whales rarely travel in the Baltic Sea because they find little food there. Conservationists hope that the animal will soon find its way out of the Baltic Sea, because noise and pollutants in the sea can cause high levels of stress in whales. Fishing nets are also a great danger.
