First laps for the new metro

Air-conditioned, automated, the future Marseille metro is on track. It will take two years of night work, during which every weekday evening around a hundred agents from around twenty different companies will be busy on the tracks, in the premises and in the new trains.

Nearly 220 kilometers of cables and 200 positioning beacons which will enable automated metro operation must be installed on the tracks. As a result, the metros no longer run on weekday evenings for the duration of the work, and replacement buses have been put in place by the RTM (Régie des transports marseillais).

The 38 new trains will be gradually deployed from autumn 2025, before the installation of screen doors, as on lines 1 and 14 in Paris. The Marseille metro will thus be completely renovated for 2028, and at a cost of 600 million euros.
