With Hannes Loth, the first mayor of the AfD has now been elected. He won the runoff in Raguhn-Jessnitz, a small town in Saxony-Anhalt.

In the small town of Raguhn-Jeßnitz, the AfD will have a full-time mayor for the first time in Saxony-Anhalt. In the run-off election on Sunday, AfD member of parliament Hannes Loth prevailed over non-party candidate Nils Naumann. The 42-year-old Loth received 51.13 percent of the votes, as the city announced on its Facebook page in the evening. According to the provisional election result, 31-year-old Naumann got 48.87 percent. According to the information, the turnout in the municipality in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district was 61.51 percent.

Election is a success for the AfD

Around 7,800 people were eligible to vote. Only a week ago, Robert Stuhlmann, the first AfD district administrator in Germany, was elected in Sonneberg in southern Thuringia. This further fueled the debate about the AfD’s current high, which ranks around 20 percent in Germany-wide polls.
