Firecrackers and gunshots fired during New Year’s Eve leave one dead and 274 injured

The fireworks, firecrackers and other shots traditionally fired to celebrate the New Year in Italy left one dead and 274 injured, the national police announced on Monday.

In Afragola, near Naples (south), a 45-year-old woman died after being “hit by a projectile during the festivities, probably fired by a member of her family,” the police said in a press release.

Two seriously injured

The total number of injured on the peninsula stands at 274, of whom 49 required hospitalization and two are in serious condition. Figures up compared to New Year 2023, marked by 180 injuries and 48 hospitalizations but no deaths.

“Once again, the most serious accidents are due to the incorrect use of fireworks of illegal origin,” the police stressed. During the month of December, the police made numerous seizures of unapproved and therefore dangerous products.
