The number of abortions in Germany has increased significantly. According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 26,500 abortions were reported in the third quarter of 2022. The number of abortions in the third quarter of 2022 increased by 16.7 percent compared to the third quarter of 2021. Reason for increase unclear

Whether and how this development is related to the course of the corona pandemic cannot be clearly assessed on the basis of the data, as the Federal Statistical Office explained.

96 percent of the reported abortions were carried out according to the counseling regulation. In the remaining four percent of the cases, an indication for medical reasons or due to sexual offenses was the reason for the termination.

Most abortions (52 percent) were performed using the suction method, with 35 percent using the Mifegyne abortion pill.
