Unpopular macOS system settings: Apple is reportedly fundamentally reorganizing

In the upcoming version 15 of macOS, Apple is reportedly tackling one of the most controversial changes to the operating system: the manufacturer wants to fundamentally reorganize the system settings, which have been completely renovated to the annoyance of many users, as AppleInsider reports, citing informed sourcesIn future, the individual settings will be arranged according to “priority and general importance”, and the central “Settings > General”, which can be used to download updates and make basic settings, will therefore move much further up the long list.

According to the report, Apple wants to better group other settings together in parallel, including the customization options for displays and background images. The Siri icon in the menu bar of macOS 15 will also stand out in monochromatic rather than colorful form, it is said.

However, Apple seems to be sticking with the system settings user interface introduced with macOS 13, at least there have been no rumors to the contrary so far. The renovated settings are based directly on the settings of iPadOS and iOS, but in macOS a lot of them still feel like a foreign body. In addition, the adjustment resulted in a radical reorganization, so many users now have to search for the right setting.

There is repeated criticism that Apple throws together different user interface elements and that central settings are only found deeply nested in the list views that are only common on iPhones and iPads. Some users are also frustrated that the width of the system settings window cannot be changed, which is also highly unusual for a desktop operating system such as macOS. Apple has added some of the controls that were missing after the redesign, including network environments.

Apple will present the next versions of its operating systems at WWDC 2024 on June 10, including iOS 18 and macOS 15. No other major innovations in macOS 15 have been announced yet, but in recent years the annual updates have often been limited to minor improvements – especially in the system apps. This time, a deep integration of additional AI functions is also expected. Apple usually releases the updates in September, macOS sometimes not until October.
