No component of a smartphone is as crucial to its lifespan as the battery. A slightly outdated camera, for example, doesn’t necessarily take bad pictures just because it’s old. The skill of the photographer determines the quality of a photo. And a processor that takes two seconds faster to open an app is unlikely to be a reason to purchase a new one. An old battery, on the other hand, does if it only lasts half the day. And of course we also want the battery to be charged quickly when it is empty. This is exactly where fast chargers come into play, which are still discredited for damaging the battery and its lifespan.
Fast charger and battery life
One thing in advance: This is not the case, otherwise Apple, Samsung & Co. would not offer a fast charging function. Because it doesn’t matter whether the battery charges quickly or slowly, it always wears out over time. The reason why fast chargers are still discredited for damaging the battery is due to their heat production, as heat and cold can damage the battery. More specifically, the salts in the waterless electrolyte solution. That’s why you shouldn’t expose your smartphone to direct sunlight or forget it in the car when it’s hot.
Now you will of course object that a 30 watt fast charger produces more heat than a normal 10 watt charger. And yes, that is correct if the fast charger were to charge continuously at full wattage. However, a fast charger only charges at full power at the beginning and then decreases as the battery level increases in order to avoid heat development. This means the battery doesn’t get too hot.
Manufacturers indicate how long a battery lasts in full charging cycles. Most calculate with 80 percent of the battery performance after 800 charging cycles. Unfortunately, replacing the battery on most smartphones is difficult and is beyond the skill of qualified personnel. Exceptions would be, for example, the devices from Fairphone or Shiftphone, because the manufacturers design their smartphones so that normal people can also change the battery.
Observe fast charging standards
Important: You can’t just clip any fast charger to any smartphone. It would be too good to be true if the manufacturers would agree on a standard. The most common fast charging standard is Quick Charge from the chip manufacturer Qualcomm, whose chips work primarily in Android smartphones.
From version Quickcharge 4.0 onwards, the Qualcomm standard is compatible with USB Power Delivery (USB-PD). This is the USB fast charging function that Apple and Google rely on on their smartphones. So you can also charge the Google Pixel or iPhone with a Quick Charge 4.0 charger.
Important: Not all smartphones use USB-PD in the same way. Some models draw more watts from a USB PD charger than others. So you have to look at how many watts your smartphone draws from a charger and buy a charger that offers at least that much wattage.
In addition to the two most common standards, there are also the respective manufacturers’ own standards. For example, at OnePlus this would be WarpCharge, at Oppo it is called SuperVOOC, at Samsung it is called Super Fast Charging and at Motorola it is called TurboPower. Unfortunately, when you use a smartphone from these manufacturers, you are forced to use their chargers and cables if you want to charge your smartphone quickly.

If this is too complicated for you, just wait. Charger manufacturers also have their own standards. Anker, for example, calls its PowerIQ. The good thing is that this charging standard is compatible with several standards. In the case of PowerIQ, it is compatible with USB-PD and QuickCharge.
