Even after decades, panic rocker Udo Lindenberg still has success in the charts. But he also paints and draws. The largest Udo show to date now shows Lindenberg’s versatility in Rostock.

The largest Udo Lindenberg show to date opens in Rostock on Thursday. There, the recently renovated art gallery has been transformed into a panic rocker temple.

In addition to drawings and paintings by the 77-year-old, there are also posters, record covers, instruments and outfits from his decades-long musical career on 2,000 square meters. The show “Udo Lindenberg – painter, music and great show” can be seen until August 27th.

At the pre-opening with around 200 invited guests on Wednesday evening, the density of hats was already significantly higher due to numerous fans dressed in typical Lindenberg style. Musically, they got their money’s worth with a performance by musicians from the panic orchestra. Lindenberg had recently apologized for the flu: “Can hardly speak, let alone yodel,” it said in a statement. He promised to come when he was fit again.

“More Udo is not possible”

Bassist Steffi Stephan, who has been making music with Lindenberg for 60 years, was impressed by the retrospective. “More Udo is not possible.” Lindenberg’s Likörelle, watercolors made of colored alcohol, which often move between cartoon and caricature, can be seen, but also contemporary history such as awards or excerpts from Lindenberg’s Stasi files. For reasons of space, monumental works by Lindenberg are also shown in the Rostock Marienkirche.

Udo Lindenberg started his musical career as a drummer. With German lyrics he then became a rock star. Songs like “Andrea Doria”, “Cello”, “Girls from East Berlin”, “Sonderzug nach Pankow” and “Horizont” are among the hits from the 70s and 80s. For weeks, Lindenberg has been leading the single charts with the song “Komet” together with German rapper Apache 207.
