As part of an EU directive, the government had laid down paternity leave in the coalition agreement. However, implementation should not take place until 2024. Because of the delay, proceedings by the EU Commission against Germany are already underway.
Federal Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) has announced that the planned regulation on paternity leave will be implemented in the year after next. “The two-week release after the birth is coming, not this year, but in 2024,” Paus told the newspapers of the Funke media group.
Because the economic situation is currently difficult, especially for small and medium-sized companies, she wants to “put this important project on track next year”.

Paid leave for fathers or the second parent is provided for at least ten days after the birth of a child. According to Paus, the exemption should be recorded in the Maternity Protection Act. Parents must be supported in their wish for a partnership to share family work. This is “another important building block for the compatibility of family and work”.
The planned regulation is part of the coalition agreement. Germany is thus implementing an EU directive. However, because Germany has not yet implemented the project, the EU Commission has already initiated infringement proceedings against the Federal Republic. The European regulation has been in force since July.
