Proto-danksharing (or EIP-4844) aims to aggregate off-chain data blobs so that more data can be included in Ethereum transactions without affecting block processing times. “The overwhelming difference users will notice from the EIP-4844 upgrade is that transaction fees will be significantly reduced,” said Anthony Rose, Head of Engineering at Matter Labs, a primary sponsor of zkSync.
zkSync, which acts as a Layer 2 network on the Ethereum main network, aggregates hundreds of thousands of transactions in batches. It is then verified on the mainnet. However, this verification incurs a fee which is passed on to the user.
Currently, the average transaction fee on zkSync is around $0.20, with EIP-4844 bringing the fee to around $0.08–$0.10 per transaction. The team estimates that this data component could be reduced nearly tenfold after Duncan, which could result in average fees (per transaction) falling to below $0.10.
Taking advantage of Boojum
“We are working on a number of protocol improvements. This, combined with EIP-4844-specific changes, will have a significant impact on zkSync performance,” Rose said.
One of these is the launch of Boojum, a STARK-based proof system designed to enable networks to compress and distribute large amounts of data to the mainnet within batches.
Boojum has played a key role in the amount of data zkSync integrates into Ethereum per Layer 2 batch, and now the value that Duncan brings will make it even more worthwhile.
“With the Boojum upgrade, we’ve included some changes to how data is distributed to L1 (partly to prepare for EIP-4844), but this also helps us introduce better compression. and at the same time We increased the L2 batch size,” explains Rose.
“Our batches will be bigger. And transactions will be cheaper,” he added.
