End of suspense, Pedro Sánchez finally remains at the head of government

For five days, Spain had been hanging on the decision of the Spanish Prime Minister whether or not to remain in his post. This Monday, Pedro Sánchez put an end to the suspense by announcing that he would not resign after all.

The elected official had suspended his agenda after the opening of an investigation for influence peddling and corruption against his wife. Believing that it was a destabilization campaign orchestrated by the right-wing opposition, he indicated that he was thinking about his future at the head of the country.

An unprecedented crisis

A first in Spain. In power since 2018, the 52-year-old socialist leader finally announced mid-morning, from the Moncloa palace, that he remained in office.

This political crisis has had repercussions on the campaign for the European elections since although the PSOE candidate (Teresa Ribera) is already known, the preparation of the lists was delayed until Tuesday.
