12,000 people evacuated: A World War II bomb weighing 500 kilograms is discovered in the German capital. There are two detonators on the dud that are to be removed on site and then blown up.

The World War II bomb in Berlin-Friedrichshain has been defused. Up to 12,000 residents are allowed to return to their homes. The closures were lifted, the police said on Twitter on Friday morning. The remains of the bomb are now to be taken to the police detonation site in Grunewald.

According to the police, there were two detonators on the dud that were to be removed on site using a cutting system with high-pressure water and then blown up.

According to the spokeswoman, the police were on Thursday afternoon with two loudspeaker vans. 250 police officers took care of the road closures and went from door to door. On Twitter, people were asked to leave the area on their own. Emergency accommodation was set up in the Mercedes-Benz Arena with a separate room for people who had tested positive for the corona virus, it said.
