Bavaria: the official veterinarian reform – Bavaria

Before the state elections, Prime Minister Söder promised the farmers’ association that in the future the Ministry of Agriculture would be responsible for animal welfare checks on farms. Now almost everything stays with the old system.

The splitting up of the veterinary offices in Bavaria and the transfer of responsibility for animal welfare checks on farms to the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture have been cancelled. The state government has now decided this. This averts the weakening of animal protection on farms in Bavaria that animal rights activists and official veterinarians feared. “A closely interlinked, efficient food and veterinary administration is essential for a high level of consumer protection,” says Environment and Consumer Protection Minister Thorsten Glauber (Free Voters). “The colleagues at the veterinary offices can continue their proven and competent work as a unit.”
