Dual vocational training: the number of trainees continues to fall

Status: 08/30/2022 12:52 p.m

The number of new training contracts will remain at a historically low level in 2021. The Corona crisis had further exacerbated the trend away from traditional training.

The number of new training contracts also fell last year. According to the Federal Statistical Office, a total of 466,200 new dual vocational training contracts were signed. The number of new contracts was therefore slightly higher at plus 0.6 than in the first Corona year 2020.

However, it was still nine percent behind the pre-crisis year of 2019. At that time, more than 500,000 new contracts were recorded. A total of 1,255,400 people were in dual vocational training across Germany at the end of 2021. That is three percent less than in 2020.

Trend booster Corona crisis

The corona crisis has thus exacerbated the long-term trend that fewer and fewer young people are choosing classic training in companies and vocational schools, the statisticians write. Since 2011, the number of trainees has fallen by 14 percent, while the number of people of the typical training age between 15 and 24 years has only fallen by six percent. It fell to 7.4 million.

Retail remains popular

Apprenticeships in the retail, office and automotive sectors remain particularly popular. According to Destatis, as in 2020, most trainees completed a degree in retail sales (24,300). 22,900 people became office management clerks. 20,100 trainees decided on a career as a salesperson.

19,900 people wanted to become motor vehicle mechatronics technicians, and there were 17,400 medical assistants. In 2021, a good fifth, i.e. 22 percent of all new contracts, were for these five training courses.

Setback for the tourism industry

The situation on the training market has changed, among other things in IT professions such as IT. Apprentices in this profession were able to record an increase of five percent, and e-commerce merchants even an increase of 26 percent. As at the beginning of the Corona crisis, only a few young people started a cooking apprenticeship in 2021, but the number of trainees in system gastronomy rose by 18 percent.

There is little confidence among tourism merchants, where the number of new contracts fell again by 26 percent after the sharp 61 percent slump in 2020. There were only 460 new contracts here in 2021.
