Dresden jewel theft: last main suspect captured

A sixth suspect has been arrested in connection with the break-in of the historic Green Vault in Dresden. As the public prosecutor in Dresden announced, it is a 23-year-old. He was arrested on Thursday morning by the Dresden police in an apartment in Berlin-Treptow. 24 officers were involved in the operation. A mobile phone was found during the search of the apartment.

The public prosecutor’s office in Dresden accuses the accused Ahmed R. of, among other things, of serious gang theft and arson. It is to be presented to the investigating judge in Dresden in the afternoon.

The investigators assume that all six people who were directly involved in the break-in into the historic Green Vault have been identified. In November 2020, one year after the robbery, the first three suspects were arrested in Berlin. Two others were arrested in December 2020 and May 2021, also in Berlin.

There is still no trace of the valuable booty. The investigation into the art treasures continued, the prosecutor said. “Due to the size and complexity of the matter, they will still take a considerable amount of time.”
