Draw against Sevilla: Dortmund misses early round of 16 entry

Status: 10/11/2022 10:51 p.m

On Tuesday (October 11th, 2022) Borussia Dortmund missed out on qualifying for the round of 16 in the Champions League with a 1-1 (1-1) win against FC Sevilla. Tanguy Nianzou (18th) gave the Spaniards the lead. Jude Bellingham (35th) equalized before the break. Despite the draw, Dortmund still have the best chance of reaching the knockout stages with seven points as second in Group G.

After Manchester City’s draw in Copenhagen, it was clear that a win would give Borussia Dortmund a chance to reach the round of 16 early. BVB coach Edin Terzic tried this plan with four changes in the starting XI. Thomas Meunier, Tom Rothe, Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Modeste were new to the field.

Bellingham equalizes Sevilla’s lead

However, the game did not start in the interest of the Westphalians: Unlike in the first leg, Sevilla presented themselves as aggressive opponents. The Spaniards had the first chance: Ivan Rakitic put a low cross over the goal (11th). The former Schalke player was again involved in the lead. His free kick landed on ex-Munich player Nianzou, who headed into the goal.

The black and yellow responded well: first Karim Adeyemi negligently missed an opportunity (24th), then there could have been a penalty after a boarding against young BVB star Bellingham (28th). After a sharp cross from the right, the young Englishman equalized to set a new record: no teenager from the island has been better – it was his fourth goal in fourth Champions League game this season.

Kobel holds the draw

After the change of sides, Dortmund was more active and tried again and again to overturn Seville’s defence. The hosts were initially not dangerous. Instead, goalkeeper Gregor Kobel held on to the draw when he showed an outstanding reflex against Erik Lamela, who was completely free (66′).

Little changed in the course of the game until the end: a lot of BVB ball possession, few ideas. “We didn’t manage to build up pressure with the ball and lost the ball a lot,” said Mats Hummels on Amazon Prime. He himself provided the only more dangerous end with a header after a corner (79th). In the final phase, both teams shied away from the final risk and settled for a draw.

BVB to the top game in the league

BVB continues in the Bundesliga on Sunday. Then Borussia are guests at leaders Union Berlin (16.10.22, 5.30 p.m.).
