The list of up to 55 players that the German Football Association, like all World Cup participants, had to submit to FIFA on Friday should also include the names of other surprise candidates such as Christoph Kramer (31; Gladbach) and Robin Knoche (30; Union Berlin) who, like Götze, have not been considered for the DFB-Elf for years. Meanwhile, Armel Bella-Kotchap (20; Southampton FC) is missing from the squad last called up for September’s friendlies.

The 57-year-old Flick will announce his final squad on November 10, it may include a maximum of 26 players. The provisional squad list published by “Bild” includes 44 players, including five goalkeepers. According to the report, Flick is considering taking four goalkeepers to Qatar. So far, three have been the norm, but a maximum of 23 players were allowed to be nominated in past tournaments.
