Seven Bundesliga teams are in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup – and second division club 1. FC Nürnberg. The Franks now have a big wish.

After the acclaimed entry into the quarter-finals, the second division soccer team 1. FC Nürnberg is looking forward to another big cup evening against a Bundesliga club.

“FC Bayern would be amazing,” said Nuremberg captain Christopher Schindler after the 5-3 penalty shoot-out against Fortuna Düsseldorf in the round of 16. The 32-year-old Schindler once played for TSV 1860 Munich, which would make a showdown with Bayern particularly tingling for him.

Coach Weinzierl dreams of a home game

First and foremost, however, everyone at the “Club” was happy to be the only second division team to have made it into the sportingly and financially lucrative quarter-finals alongside seven first division teams. “We are delighted to be part of this illustrious circle,” said Schindler.

Nuremberg coach Markus Weinzierl, who has already worked for FC Augsburg, Schalke 04 and VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, did not want to commit himself to a preferred opponent. “The names are all big, I don’t have one that I prefer,” said Weinzierl. What he wants most of all is a home game.

Quarterfinal draw is coming up

In addition to record cup winners FC Bayern, defending champions RB Leipzig, last year’s finalists SC Freiburg, Weinzierl’s former club VfB Stuttgart, Union Berlin, Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund are possible opponents in Nuremberg. The quarter-finals will be drawn on February 19th and will be played on April 4th and 5th.
