Tourists warned they could be turned away if they try solo dining in Barcelona | Travel News | Travel

Solo travel is on the rise and more tourists than ever are taking the plunge and exploring alone.

However, the travellers have been warned they could be turned away from some of Barcelona’s most popular restaurants.

Bans on solo diners are reportedly becoming more common in some of the Spanish city’s busiest areas.

According to Spanish paper El Pais, solo diner bans are particularly common on Carrer de Blai, often known as the “Street of Tapas”.

Solo diners have been refused seats by staff and those who are allowed in are often seated in unappealing areas, such as by the toilet.

A solo diner who was turned away told the paper: “On the first terrace where I got a table, a waiter quickly arrived and told me that it was reserved.

“It was not. As soon as I got up, a group of foreigners who were behind me sat down.”

The diner said he was forced to go back home without eating after another restaurant told him the terrace was only for groups.

A local resident also told the paper that a bar had refused her several times, despite her being a loyal customer.

Residents have also moaned that tables are kept for foreign tourists, leaving them unable to get a seat.

Barcelona has struggled to cope with the high number of tourists visiting the city in recent years.
