Tiny detail in Aldi packaging leaves customers outraged – and it’s not the first time

  • Aldi shopper baffled by ‘extra layer’ of plastic
  • But Aldi says it’s an error not the norm

An Aldi shopper has been left furious after opening meat they bought at the supermarket over the weekend.

The customer, who lives in Sydney, was shocked to find a second layer of plastic covering the meat which was already sealed.

They slammed the retailer for ‘taking  backward step’ in reducing plastic waste after making huge changes in store including switching plastic bags.

An Aldi customer was left feeling confused after noticing an extra layer of plastic on their pork schnitzels

‘The amount of plastic packaging felt excessive and didn’t appear to serve any additional purpose in protecting the food. The plastic container seemed more than enough to me,’ they told Yahoo.

Adding it seemed weird to add more than one layer of plastic over the pork schnitzels as one should offer enough protection.

Aldi recently changed the packaging for its mince – placing the meat in a bag to eliminate the extra waste from trays.

It boasted 70 per cent less waste on the package.

Making the confused customer’s point. Daily Mail Australia reached out to Aldi Australia for comment.

They said the perceived ‘extra layer of packaging’ is not the norm for the schnitzel.

‘In an isolated incident, the layer of plastic that enables short life products to be vacuum sealed seems to have separated from the container while being processed, appearing as an additional layer of packaging despite this not being the case,’ a spokesperson said.

‘There is no food safety issue or risk to the product being consumed. This does not meet our high-quality standards and we’re investigating how it occurred and any customers that aren’t completely satisfied with the product to return to store for a full refund.’

This isn’t the first time customers have been furious over the store’s plastic packaging.

In January shoppers were infuriated after seeing pre-cut watermelon in plastic containers lining the fridge shelves.

Other people were unimpressed with the plastic packaging on the product.

‘Bit of a set back towards their plastic reduction target,’ one man said

‘I don’t like it. What a waste of plastic,’ another wrote.
