‘Buzzing’ Greek city is one of this summer’s cheapest breaks with ‘powder’ beaches | Travel News | Travel

With the end of summer fast approaching, last-minute British holidaymakers will need to move quickly to secure a break.

According to the travel experts at Which Travel? a beautiful city in Greece is one of the best options for a last minute August holiday.

While Bilbao was the cheapest last-minute option, Thessaloniki is another fantastic option for the end of August.

A Which? spokesperson said: “Greece’s second city is buzzing in summer. Escape the midday sun in its fresco-adorned Roman Rotunda, Byzantine museum, century-old food market and traditional coffee houses and tavernas.

“Or catch the breeze on a boat ride on the Thermaic Gulf. In the evenings, join locals strolling along the regenerated waterfront, beneath a hulking tower built by the Ottomans. The powder-soft beaches of Halkidiki are an easy day trip.”

Greece’s second largest but often forgotten city, Thessaloniki is well deserving of its time in the spotlight.

The city’s top attraction on Tripadvisor is the Church of Saint Dimitrios, situated in the heart of the centre.

A tourist ‘Bosko A’ said: “Beautiful church with amazing art on the wall. When you go into the church, it is enormous, huge inside and beautiful at the same time.”

Tourists could also check out the city’s Archaeological Museum or visit the White Tower for views.

The Ladadika District is one of Thessaloniki’s most popular districts and is packed with restaurants, bars and coffee shops.

Halidiki’s beaches are a short drive away and tourists will be able to relax on a sheltered bay with crystal clear water.

The city is also renowned for its food and there are plenty of dishes Britons should sample while in Thessaloniki.

One of the city’s top treats is a bougatsa, a layered filo pastry pie, stuffed with feta or custard.

Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, said: “Jetting off in the summer holidays this year could be very pricey, but we’ve found it’s not too late to bag a bargain coastal break this August, whether you’re in the mood to simply fly and flop or want a bit of city life thrown in too.”
