Desert hike – pilgrimage to Mount Nebo – trip

Desert hike:Pilgrimage to Mount Nebo

Jordan wants to reopen the route to Mount Nebo in Madaba Governorate southwest of Amman for Christian pilgrims. According to the ministry, the expansion will take place in several phases. Among other things, the creation of a 30-kilometer pilgrimage route is planned. On Mount Nebo, a holy place has been commemorating the prophet Moses since early Christian times, who, according to biblical reports, was allowed to see the promised land on the other side of the Jordan after the Israelites left Egypt after 40 years of wandering through the desert, but was never allowed to enter it. A basilica from the Byzantine period decorated with impressive mosaics testifies to this veneration as well as the foundations of later monastery buildings. In 1932 the Franciscan Custody acquired the site. The sanctuary on the 800 meter high rock plateau was reopened in October 2016 after a comprehensive restoration lasting around ten years.
