The musical “& Julia” starts in Hamburg in October 2024. The news agency spot on news met the German leading actress.

why this Don’t take happiness into your own hands? Why not challenge Shakespeare? It took long enough for someone to dare to take a play as awesome as “Romeo and Juliet” and translate it freshly and cheekily into today. On October 30, 2024, the Broadway hit “& Julia” will premiere at the Hamburg Stage Operettenhaus. A Juliet with Romeo, but also one who doesn’t necessarily need him. Because: “There is life after Romeo” is the motto of the musical, which fits perfectly into the woke wave alongside “Barbie” or “Poor Things”.

The news agency spot on news watched the music show on New York’s Broadway and met the German leading actress in the American metropolis.

“I wish Celine Dion was in the audience”

In “&Juliet” the story of William Shakespeare’s famous play continues: What happens if Juliet decides to live after Romeo’s death? Julia, played by Chiara Fuhrmann (29), goes on a search for happiness and love in a modern and independent world. But this isn’t just new for Julia. Chiara Fuhrmann is also breaking new ground with her first title role: with hits from Katy Perry (39) to Céline Dion (56) to Britney Spears (42) and Ariana Grande (30) – the songs of these pop icons fit seamlessly into the action and enliven the piece with their very own emotions. “It is an incredible honor for me to follow in the footsteps of such great singers. Their music has inspired and influenced me, and now I can bring it to life on stage,” says Fuhrmann.

And when it comes to celebrating with the audience the songs that she herself “heard up and down in her childhood room,” then it would be an even greater wish for the young artist to meet one of the singers in Hamburg: “Me I would like Céline Dion to come over and if Katy Perry wants to come: Yes!” said the Osnabrück native.

“& Julia” sets new accents on the stage

Julia’s new story isn’t just brought to life through a playlist of the greatest hits of the 1990s and 2000s. In addition to the strong female development that the songs show, “& Julia” also addresses other forms of love. For example, love for friends, and queer love also takes center stage. “I hope that ‘& Julia’ will encourage viewers to do things differently and to engage in new forms of entertainment,” said the 29-year-old.

David West Read (41), Emmy winner and author of “Schitt’s Creek”, gives the piece a humorous touch. With quick-witted dialogues and pointed puns, he makes the audience laugh and at the same time stimulates thought. A highlight for the Hamburg musical actress is the moment when Julia learns to love herself as she is: “That’s such an important message for me,” she says, “I noticed how everyone in the hall was excited. Plus the song ‘Roar’ as a hymn to self-love – it doesn’t really get any better than that.”

Times Square reception for Chiara Fuhrmann

Chiara Fuhrmann was introduced as the German leading actress on May 3rd in New York. With tears in her eyes, she read her name on the large neon signs in New York’s Times Square. For her, it was also a bonding experience with her role, as she reveals: “The whole journey from the casting to New York with my name on the billboard. That’s proof for me that my path was the right one too.”

On May 10, 2024, Fuhrmann will present himself to a larger German audience for the first time. On the occasion of Hamburg’s harbor anniversary, songs from the musical will be performed live. Three other main actors from “& Julia” will also be introduced on this day.
