For the seventh time, Extinction Rebellion has blocked a section of an expressway in The Hague. The police used water cannons to clear the area.
The Dutch police arrested several hundred people at a demonstration by climate activists in The Hague. For the seventh time, they had blocked a section of the A12 motorway not far from the seat of parliament and government in the Netherlands.
According to the group Extinction Rebellion, the action was intended to protest against the government’s energy policy. According to estimates, more than 3,000 people followed the call to participate.
According to the police, hundreds of demonstrators were removed from the street and taken to waiting buses. Some had chained themselves together. According to the ANP news agency, the police used water cannons to prevent the demonstrators from blocking the section of the motorway. Officials intervened earlier this time than in previous Extinction Rebellion disruptions. The city administration of The Hague had previously warned the demonstrators that blocking the expressway was prohibited.
