The ARD repeats a “crime scene” from Freiburg with investigators Tobler and Berg. Did publisher’s daughter Sara Manzer murder her father? After her release from prison, doubts arise.

  • 4 out of 5 points
  • Solid crime thriller in which there is not just one, but two murder cases to be solved

What’s the matter?

Sara Manzer (Johanna Wokalek) is released from prison after five years. The publisher’s daughter was in prison because she is said to have stabbed her father Karl. Back in freedom, Manzer tries to build a new life for herself, with the help of long-time companions like her best friend Marlene Hopp (Sophie Lutz) and new acquaintances like her fellow inmate Ines Kaiser (Annette Strasser). But Manzer’s past catches up with her: doubts arise about her confession at the time. She herself cannot remember killing her father. One person who wanted to investigate the case more closely was ex-police officer Benno Rose. Before he can share his findings, he is also found stabbed to death.

Why is “Crime Scene: Sara’s Confession” worth it?

The “crime scene” from the Black Forest is always like a surprise bag: you never know what to expect. A completely crazy case like the carnival episode “I cried in a dream” (2020) or an exciting film like “Rebland” (2020). With the episode “Sara’s Confession”, screenwriter Astrid Ströher and director Kai Wessel have created a solid crime thriller. The film offers a good dose of excitement – scary figures in the dark, snow-covered, lonely forests, a high-speed chase through Freiburg – and a convincing leading actress in Johanna Wokalek. In addition, the investigators Franziska Tobler (Eva Löbau) and Friedemann Berg (Hans-Jochen Wagner) have to deal with two cases: They not only have to find the murderer of the police officer Benno Rose, but also find out who was responsible for the death of the publisher Karl Manzer is responsible. Double the tension until the end.

What bothers?

A murder case that is being reopened after many years because the wrong perpetrator was presumably behind bars: The scenario is strongly reminiscent of the Cologne case “Four Years”, which was broadcast almost at the same time in 2022.

The commissioners?

It’s complicated – that’s probably the best way to describe the relationship between Franziska Tobler and Friedemann Berg. Since they ended up in bed together after a carnival party, the investigators’ private lives have ceased to exist. It’s as if not only the commissioners but also the spectators should forget what happened. In this case too, the focus is on purely official matters.
