Despite Corona: number of Hessian cinemas almost unchanged

Despite Covid-19 and the consequences for some sectors of the economy, the number of cinemas in Hesse has hardly changed. “Since the outbreak of the pandemic, two cinemas have been closed, but one has also been opened,” said Erwin Heberling, Managing Director of the Hessen Film and Cinema Office in Frankfurt. There are over 120 cinemas in total, and the pandemic had hit the industry badly. “The stock was highly endangered, but the government aid programs had an effect,” said Heberling.

Nevertheless, he sees no reason for joy among the operators. Although there hasn’t been a lockdown since last year, people still don’t flock to the cinemas, especially the over 35-year-olds stay away. Heberling sees several reasons, people’s going-out behavior has changed, for example, the streaming services have increased significantly.
