CES: This is what service robots can look like – terrifyingly human (video)

And it was presented this week at the US tech show CES in Las Vegas. Thanks to groundbreaking advances in artificial intelligence and the motor skills that can display human facial gestures, the humanoid robot Ameca is already quite communicative. Ameca was developed by the British company Engineered Arts over a period of four years. Morgan Roe was involved: “We first look at what a human can do and we use this animation and then we work backwards, as it were: ‘How can we do this mechanically? It’s not just about making it look human. It is about the robot moving humanly. ” To achieve the impressive resemblance to a human, the robot – which has more than 17 motors installed in its head alone – uses both AI and a human operator who remotely controls Ameca’s speech and facial expressions. “It’s a hybrid system. We have AI, but there is also a human who speaks and listens through the robot. This human can be anywhere in the world. But we have to do it that way, as a first step.” And what would Ameca be used for at some point? According to Roe, it could be used as a so-called service robot in hotels, shopping centers or airports. For people at home, however, Ameca would not be a great asset.
