CDU politician: Dagmar Schipanski is dead

The CDU politician and former candidate for the office of Federal President, Dagmar Schipanski, is dead. According to her family, the determined campaigner for the completion of reunification died on Wednesday.

The former presidential candidate Dagmar Schipanski is according to information from ARD Capital Studios died. According to the family, she died on Wednesday after a short, serious illness.

Schipanski was a long-standing member of the executive committees of the CDU. Born in Thuringia and with a doctorate in natural sciences, she was the first woman to head the Science Council of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1996. In 1999, when she was still a non-partisan academic, she ran for the office of Federal President. Schipanski was defeated by the later Federal President Johannes Rau (SPD).

Heart theme reunification

She used the popularity she gained as a result to promote her heartfelt topic, the completion of German reunification, in speeches and performances throughout Germany. Schipanski did not talk about the problems of the unification process, but rather sought rapprochement through mutual understanding.

From 1999 to 2004 she was Minister for Science, Research and Art of the Free State of Thuringia. She was also a member of the Leopoldina and did voluntary work, for example as President of the German Cancer Aid. Dagmar Schipanski was 79 years old.
