CDU leader Merz has accused the federal government of not doing justice to the changes caused by the war against Ukraine. Chancellor Scholz proclaimed the “turn of the era” a year ago, but not much happened after that, he said in the daily topics.
The CDU chairman Friedrich Merz has made serious allegations against Chancellor Olaf Scholz. A year ago – a few days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – he conjured up a “turning point” in foreign and security policy in the Bundestag. Merz threw Scholz in the daily topics now pretend not to properly classify the war against Ukraine.
“The population understands that February 24, 2022 is a really deep break in our European history,” said Merz daily topics. However, many in Berlin asked themselves whether “the turning point had actually arrived in the federal government”. The governing coalition does not perceive this war as a “really deep turning point”. The conflict goes far beyond the actual war zone in Ukraine. For the first time in post-war history, Europe is dealing with authoritarian regimes in China and Russia, which openly threatened military force in order to expand their spheres of influence.

Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is causing a tectonic shift in power structures around the world. “My assessment is that the federal government does not do justice to that,” said Merz.
She always tries “to do the minimum to support Ukraine’s right to self-defense.” In this context, Merz accused Scholz of not communicating his policy. “The impression remains that the chancellor hesitates and hesitates and only makes decisions under pressure.”
