In Berlin-Lichterfelde, a metal technology company is on fire. According to the fire department, hazardous substances are stored in the facility. Residents should keep doors and windows closed.

The fire department is warning of toxic smoke gases due to a fire in Berlin-Lichterfelde. As the fire department wrote in an official hazard notice on Friday, the smoke is currently moving north over the city. It is advised to avoid the area. Residents were asked to close windows and doors and turn off air conditioning.

It is expected that the cloud of smoke will move over Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Spandau, Tegel and also the west of Reinickendorf over Berlin.

Toxic hydrogen cyanide could form

The fire broke out on Friday morning in a metal technology company on Am Stichkanal street. As a fire department spokesman told rbb, the fire started in a technical room on the first floor of the multi-story building. The entire building is now fully engulfed in flames. The fire can currently only be fought from the outside.

According to the spokesman, there are chemicals in the buildings, including copper cyanide and sulfuric acid. There is also a risk that toxic hydrogen cyanide could form. In order to detect pollutants in the air, the fire department will now also carry out measurements in the wider city area.

According to the fire department, no one was injured. The fire department is on site with 124 emergency services. The company’s employees could have gotten themselves to safety. The surrounding buildings, including a hardware store and a grocery store, were evacuated.
