Oliver Kahn speaks out after Uli Hoeneß’s criticism. Former Bayern boss Kahn also looks back on the separation.

Oliver Kahn reacted with astonishment to Uli Hoeneß’s criticism. Honorary President Hoeneß had described Kahn’s appointment as CEO of FC Bayern as a “big mistake”, which Kahn didn’t like.

“To be honest, I’m surprised about it. FC Bayern and I agreed in the summer that we wanted to close this chapter amicably and that I would like to remain part of the FC Bayern family in the future,” Kahn told “Bild”. “I continue to stand by that. Uli Hoeneß’s current statements do not necessarily contribute to respectful coexistence.”

Hoeneß spoke about politics in the Sunday regulars’ table on BR television about the state elections. But he also discussed FC Bayern and Kahn.

Kahn’s appointment as Bayern boss “a big mistake”

“The most important thing, if you want to change something, is to start with yourself and admit that you have made mistakes. And the appointment of Oliver Kahn as CEO was a big mistake,” said Hoeneß, “and when I realized that If you can’t do that, I changed that together with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.” Hoeneß and Rummenigge are both members of the supervisory board.

After the last Bundesliga matchday in May, FC Bayern parted ways with Kahn and the contract has now been terminated. Sports director Hasan Salihamzidic also had to go. Hoeneß also commented on Kahn’s work ethic in the TV show on Sunday. “Oliver Kahn recently said in an interview that a CEO doesn’t have to work 24 hours a day. Then I answered that, but it should be twelve,” said the 71-year-old.

“In my role as CEO of FC Bayern, I always acted for the club with the best of my knowledge and conscience,” said the 54-year-old Kahn. “Unfortunately, after some time it became clear that there were different ideas about the development and strategy of the club. Ultimately, it was better that everyone went their own way. That says it all.”
