The German football record champions announced this one day after the DFB Cup embarrassment at 1. FC Saarbrücken (1:2). The 24-year-old will be missing for the first time in the top game of the Bundesliga on Saturday (6.30 p.m./Sky) at Borussia Dortmund. De Ligt had already injured the same knee before the international break.

“The same capsule again, it’s very painful at the moment. We don’t have a diagnosis yet,” coach Thomas Tuchel, who has had to struggle with personnel problems in defense several times this season, said on ARD in Saarbrücken. During the press conference after the game, he added: “We hope it’s nothing structural.”

Before the classic at BVB, the coach only has Minjae Kim available as a fit central defender. Dayot Upamecano, who was also recently injured, returned to team training this week. Whether there will be enough for Saturday remains to be seen.
