Arminia Bielefeld narrowly missed defeat against Bundesliga bottom Greuther Fürth. A winter access secured the draw in the final phase.
Arminia Bielefeld played 2: 2 (1: 1) against Greuther Fürth on Sunday (16.01.2022) and late prevented Fürth’s second win of the season. Masaya Okugawa (8′) put Arminia in front early on, Jamie Leweling (35′) equalized for the visitors. Jokers then scored on both sides: first Havard Nielsen (67′) turned the game around for Fürth before Gonzalo Castro (83′) made it 2-2.
The point lets Bielefeld jump to the relegation place at the end of the 19th matchday with 18 points. “It’s two points lost. Apart from the first ten minutes, we were the better team in every respect,” said Fürth’s coach Stefan Leitl on the sports show microphone, disappointed. After the draw, Fürth remains clearly at the bottom of the Bundesliga with just seven points.
Bielefeld got off to a better start
In the basement duel tables-17. against the bottom of the table, Bielefeld got off to a dream start: Okugawa tanked through the Fürth defense after seven minutes and then put the ball precisely into the far corner. The lead gave Arminia a boost, the DSC presented itself more snappy than the guests from Bavaria, especially in the duels.

After the change of sides, a game developed at eye level. Bielefeld and Fürth were a little more determined in their search for the gates. There weren’t any great chances in the first few minutes. The changes made by SpVgg trainer Stefan Leitl in the middle of the period proved to be worth their weight in gold: Jetro Willems and Nielsen were in the game for 28 seconds, when the first named a cross into the penalty area and the second headed in after another cross pass.
Bielefeld seemed shocked after falling behind. Coach Frank Kramer’s team didn’t develop any penetrating power until the final phase. Seven minutes before the end, the ball fell at the feet of newcomer Castro, who was able to use it to equalize from 20 meters, which is worth seeing. “In the end, I hit the ball quite well and it goes right into the corner where the goalkeeper can’t reach. That was important,” Castro said of his goal.
Arminia now away against Frankfurt
Arminia opens the 20th matchday against Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday (21.01.2022) at 8.30 p.m. Greuther Fürth meets 1. FSV Mainz 05 a day later at 3.30 p.m. Both clubs are no longer represented in the DFB Cup round of 16, which takes place during the week.
