Cartel boss Karim Bouyakhrichan was supposed to serve a prison sentence in Spain. But the mafioso put money on the table for bail and was finally able to go into hiding. Observers are horrified by the failure of the authorities.

After years of searching, Spanish police arrested a leader of the Moroccan-born “Mocro Mafia” in January, who is said to have led a drug ring in southern Spain. Karim Bouyakhrichan was arrested along with five other members of the organization based in the Netherlands, authorities in Spain said at the time. Accordingly, he was at the head of a network that is said to have mainly imported cocaine into Spain and carried out money laundering. Bouyakhrichan was to be tried in Málaga. But it did not get to that. The arrest warrant expired and Bouyakhrichan was eventually released on bail of 50,000 euros.

Mocro mafia: money laundering and drug trafficking

Bouyakhrichan and his accomplices are suspected of buying 172 properties worth around 50 million euros in order to launder their profits from drug trafficking. According to the police, a total of six million euros was laundered using a “solid infrastructure” with locations in several Spanish cities, as well as Morocco, the Netherlands, the Dominican Republic and the United Arab Emirates. According to police, Bouyakhrichan is one of the most wanted criminals in the Netherlands. He has repeatedly changed his place of residence, has his own security service and is “very careful in his communication.”

Bouyakhrichan’s brother Samir, also a member of the “Macro Mafia”, was killed in 2014 near the southern Spanish city of Marbella on the Costa del Sol. Bouyakhrichan and the other suspects were supposed to be tried in Spain before being transferred to the Netherlands, where they are also accused of numerous crimes. The “Mocro Mafia” made international headlines in 2022 after it was announced that the Dutch Crown Princess Amalia was placed under increased protection for fear of an attack by the organization.
