Breakfast in Munich: Café Götterspeise in the Glockenbachviertel impresses with sweets – Munich

In the week before Easter, the Jell-O shop café is bustling like an anthill. Outside, the small coffee tables around the magnificent corner house in the middle of the Glockenbachviertel are illuminated by the morning sun. Inside there are colorful, spring-like decorations, customers are browsing for gifts and the smell of chocolate is everywhere.

Priti Sarah Henseler has been running the Jell-O for more than 20 years, but not from the start as a chocolate shop, gift shop and café all in one. Only a few years ago she had the opportunity to rent the shop next door that had become vacant during the Corona period and to expand the shop to include a small daytime café.

The core renovation of the listed old building took almost five months. Now three steps lead from the shop to the café. The compact bar counter alone takes up half of the room, with a few small round tables lining the opposite side of the wall and window. The passage between the rooms was left generously open with a view of the goods for sale. There is no clear separation of the areas. The service even brings the coffee from the back of the store because the coffee machine is still there.

It’s also worth walking across the floor mosaic next door to take a look at the cake display case. The daily changing range of truffle tarts and fruit cakes includes, for example, cheese and cherry cake, lemon or banana truffle tart (each 4.60 euros). There are also croissants filled with various fillings (from 1.90 euros), pecan nut pockets (2.90 euros) and Bircher muesli (5.90 euros) for sweet breakfasts.

The hearty offering is limited to two types of sandwiches: the roasted farmer’s bread with hummus, feta, pickled tomatoes and rocket (7.90 euros) is beautifully presented and is completely enough to fill you up. There is also grilled ciabatta with tomatoes, mozzarella, pesto and rocket (8.90 euros). If you don’t have breakfast until late in the morning, you can also order from the lunch menu and choose between a soup of the day (7.90 euros) and a veggie bowl with colorful vegetables, beetroot couscous and feta (9.90 euros).

The menu is as straightforward as the drinks menu is varied. In addition to espresso (2.20 euros) and cappuccino (3.80 euros), there are special teas from “Palais des Thés” from Paris (4.40 euros each), homemade “Dirty Chai” with Indian spiced tea and espresso (4.90 euros). Euro), golden milk with turmeric and ginger and matcha latte (5.80 euros each). In addition, juices made from orange, carrot, apple, beetroot and ginger are freshly pressed (5.80 euros).

And of course, various drinking chocolates, from whole milk (4.80 euros) to thick cocoa with chili (5.80 euros), should not be missing either. Finally, you can toast with Prosecco (4.90 euros), wine (from 7.50 euros) or Spritz (7.90 euros).
