Was Xabi Alonso about to become a coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach? The Spaniard has now confirmed that he was under discussion as Rose’s successor.

Xabi Alonso has confirmed talks with then sports director Max Eberl regarding a commitment to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

“I spoke to Max Eberl at the time,” said Alonso in one RTL-Interview. But now he is at home and immediately after the exchange with Eberl he extended his contract with Real Sociedad.

“I also have to grow a bit, improve myself to become a good coach,” explained the 40-year-old: “Who knows what the future will bring.”

The former midfield star, who played for Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in his career, was briefly traded in March 2021 as a possible successor to Marco Rose at Gladbach. Alonso has been the coach of Real Sociedad’s second team since 2019.

Eberl had announced his resignation as sports director at Gladbach in tears at the end of January. The 48-year-old gave up his post for health reasons. “I’m ending what my life was,” the ex-professional said at Borussia Park: “I can no longer work for this great club because I’m sick. I’m exhausted. I just want to get out of the mill.”
