From Japan to Africa: At this year’s Berlinale, an international jury with a wide variety of backgrounds will once again come together.

The Berlinale has them Members of this year’s jury announced. Next to the chairman, director M. Night Shyamalan (51), are seated: Karim Aïnouz (56), Anne Zohra Berrached (39), Tsitsi Dangarembga (62), Ryusuke Hamaguchi (43), Connie Nielsen (56) and Saïd Ben Said (55). The winners will be announced on February 16th.

Karim Ainouz

Aïnouz is an Algerian-Brazilian director and screenwriter who is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, which awards the Oscars. His film “The Longing of the Gusmão Sisters” was awarded the main prize in the special category “Un Certain Regard” (“Certain View”) in Cannes in 2019.

Saïd Ben Saïd

The Franco-Tunisian film producer Saïd Ben Saïd has already produced 40 films and has worked with names such as Paul Verhoeven (83), David Cronenberg (78) and Roman Polanski (88). In 2015 he founded SBS Distribution and SBS International to distribute his own productions. He is also a member of AMPAS.

Anne Zohra Berrached

The German filmmaker Anne Zohra Berrached won the prize “Perspektive Deutsches Kino” at the Berlinale in 2013 with her first feature film “Two Mothers”. Her second film “24 Weeks” was in the running for the Golden Bear in 2016 and received many awards. She also staged episodes for “Tatort” three times.

Tsitsi Dangarembga

Tsitsi Dangarembga is one of the most influential writers (“The Price of Freedom”) and filmmakers in recent Africa. As a screenwriter or director, she has been involved in many cinematic milestones in her country in recent years, such as “Neria” or “I Want a Wedding Dress”. She also runs her own production company, Nyerai Films, and launched the International Film Festival for Women in Harare in 2003. The BBC covered Dangarembga in 2020 as part of their “100 Women” list.

Ryusuke Hamaguchi

Ryusuke Hamaguchi is currently considered one of the most important filmmakers in Japan. Last year he was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for his film “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy”. He was also successful in Cannes, where he received the prize for the best screenplay. With the film adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s short story “Drive My Car”, he is now also up for election in the category “Best International Film” at the Oscars 2022.

Connie Nielsen

Actress Connie Nielsen (56) from Denmark made a name for herself with roles such as “The Devil’s Advocate”, “Gladiator” or “Mission to Mars”. She worked with Lars von Trier, among others, and was recently seen in blockbusters such as “Justice League” or “Wonder Woman 1984”.
