“Behaviours will have to change,” says Clément Beaune

Regulation of the private jet sector is on the agenda, said Minister Delegate for Transport Clément Beaune on Thursday, for whom “behaviours will have to change”. He indicated on France 2 that “at the national level as at the European level, we can think about systems, either of taxation or of regulation”.

On Sunday he had already called for regulation of the sector in the columns of Parisian. Clément Beaune insisted that this had not angered Emmanuel Macron, contrary to what the chained duck. Adding that the President and Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne had “asked him to make specific proposals”.

Different avenues studied for this regulation

Terribly polluting, the private jets of billionaires and celebrities have been the subject of controversy for several weeks, with environmental activists calling for their supervision or even their ban. A ban as proposed by the general delegate of EELV Julien Bayou would not be “not serious”, explained the minister delegate.

Taxation “may be an option”, he said, speaking rather of carbon quotas which would oblige to pay above a certain threshold of greenhouse gas emissions and finding the idea of obliging private planes interesting. run on clean fuel from 2030.

“We are in a period of behavioral change” in the face of the climate challenge, recalled Clément Beaune. “I am convinced that when there is a general mobilization and when each and every French person is asked to make an effort, to change their behavior, to consume a little less, to lower the heating a little, to lower the air conditioning, it is necessary that those who pollute the most and who have the most means (…) make a little bigger effort”, he estimated.

“I believe in responsibility,” noted the minister again. “Companies can make commitments. “This is a debate that exists in several countries and that exists at European level,” summarized Mr. Beaune, recalling that the issue would be addressed at a meeting of European ministers in October.
