The 1988 film “Beetlejuice” is officially getting a sequel. The fantasy horror comedy by director Tim Burton (64) with Michael Keaton (71) continues with “Beetlejuice 2”. “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega (20) is said to be there – and another well-known actor.
According to US media reports, Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that the sequel will hit theaters in September 2024. The industry portal “Deadline” also reportsthat Justin Theroux (51) is said to have joined the cast of “Beetlejuice 2”. He is the fourth star reportedly signed for the sequel: Michael Keaton will reprise his role as the title character, Winona Ryder (51) will reportedly reprise his role as Lydia Deetz and Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter.
Tim Burton is directing again
Tim Burton is set to return to directing Beetlejuice 2. He has already shot part one with Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, and the filmmaker worked with Jenna Ortega on the hit Netflix series “Wednesday”. It would be Justin Theroux’s first collaboration with the director. Production of Beetlejuice 2 is slated to start this week in the UK.
In 1988, Tim Burton celebrated a great success with the horror comedy “Beetlejuice”. Despite budgeting just $15 million, the flick grossed $80 million at the box office. There was also an Oscar: In 1989, the Academy awarded “Beetlejuice” for “Best Make-up”.
What is Beetlejuice about?
Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) are newly married but die in a car accident. From then on they are locked up as ghosts in their house for 125 years – after all, the authorities for life after death have a lot to do, the waiting time is long. One day the Deetz family moves into the house and annoys the Maitlands. They seek the help of bio-exorcist Beetlejuice (Keaton). Barbara and Adam don’t like his cruel ways at all. Together with Lydia Deetz (Ryder) they try to get rid of the dissolute spirit. According to press reports, Lydia Deetz and her daughter, played by Ortega, will be the focus of the story in the sequel.
