The traditional Davos World Economic Forum was actually supposed to take place next January. But now nothing comes of it again – because of the Omikron variant.

Usually leading entrepreneurs and heads of government meet once a year for the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. The meeting had to be postponed this year due to the corona pandemic and was ultimately canceled entirely.

Now the annual conference planned for January 2022 will be postponed due to the rapidly expanding Omikron variant, as the foundation announced on Monday at its headquarters in Cologny near Geneva. With the necessary corona measures and the travel restrictions due to the pandemic, it would have been extremely difficult to hold an international meeting.

The next date is planned for early summer 2022. The meeting should have taken place from January 17th to 21st in the Swiss alpine town of Davos in the canton of Graubünden.

Because of Omikron, a virtual meeting for the time being

Instead, the foundation brings executives together virtually, said WEF founder Klaus Schwab. “Collaboration between the public and private sectors has evolved and will continue to do so during the pandemic. We look forward to bringing the world’s leaders together in person soon.”

With a few exceptions, the foundation has held its annual meeting in the Swiss winter sports resort of Davos for decades. Thousands of entrepreneurs and politicians exchange ideas there on the pressing issues of business and society.
