Bavaria: researchers investigate the desecration of Jewish cemeteries – Bavaria

Jewish burial sites are vandalized again and again. Three cooperation partners, including the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, now want to investigate this in a long-term project and develop concepts for protection.

A research project on anti-Semitism aims to reveal the extent and background of attacks on Jewish cemeteries. The Salomon Ludwig Steinheim Institute for German-Jewish History, the Research Center for Jewish Architecture in Europe at the TU Braunschweig and the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments are all involved in the nationwide joint project “Net Olam – Jewish cemeteries in the focus of anti-Semitism and prevention”.

Cemetery desecrations are still rarely the subject of research, reliable data on frequency, perpetrators and backgrounds are considered difficult to obtain. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the cooperation partners want to collect and evaluate data on cemetery desecration within four years. The aim is to develop concepts for the protection of Jewish burial sites on the basis of this evaluated data.
