Bavaria: JVA Bernau – Corona outbreak and an outbreak attempt – Bavaria

Gloss of

Matthias Köpf, Bernau am Chiemsee

In all of the lockdowns of the ongoing pandemic, many people have felt almost a little trapped, and rightly so. The fact that you felt like you were in prison could only be proven by those who had never seen the inside of a correctional facility. In such institutions there is practically always lockdown, whether for vaccinated or unvaccinated persons, whether for insolvent substitute custodial prisoners or for life +. The virus, which apparently cannot be locked in or out even in prisons, has also made life behind bars more complicated. In the correctional facility in Bernau am Chiemsee, for example, there were around 100 corona cases among the 650 prisoners, so more than every seventh inmate was infected and a good number of the staff. This led to an internal lockdown in which the inmates were a little more locked up than they were before. In the meantime, the number of infections has also decreased somewhat in Bernau. And it’s been a while since the outbreak. Just like this breakout attempt.

Because while this virus apparently does not have to justify itself to anyone, two Bernau prisoners recently stood before the district court in Rosenheim. In March of last year, within a few hours, they dug a hole through the brick wall to the neighboring cell with a simple butter knife, in which four other prisoners had broken an opening in the outer wall behind a cupboard. For the abseiling from the first floor, bedclothes were knotted according to the genre, but this could already be seen on the surveillance camera, and the outbreak ended in the courtyard below. Later in the local court, one of the accused asked whether the whole thing would have been worth it even if it had been successful, because he would only have had to serve three more months. The man justified the attempt to escape with the at that time downright panic fear of the trapped of the virus, with the concern for the relatives outside and with the at best improvised protective measures inside. The fact that these measures are now more sophisticated may make it easier to stay. And the masonry was also reinforced.
